Latest Quilt News

I've been working on some english paper piecing (more info here) I got the first one done, and it looked pretty crappy. I think i will re-do it. I started working on another one in the beginning of the week, but it was eaten by dogs. I was pretty pissed. i had everything done and sewed on except for two petals. . . . So tonight that is my project, to continue onward on paper piecing flower #3. (and i still have one more to do after this one!) my fingers are so sore from it....

I also made this, which i am pretty proud of how it turned out. It still needs to be quilted and finished, but i'm determined to have it done by oct. 13 (the day of the wedding). Hopefully they will appreciate all the long hours and hard work that i put into it. If they don't, i think i'll go take it off their wall, rip out their names, and sew in my own! ha! i'm not even joking!
After writing this post, i feel like my words aren't saying what i feel right now, but i do feel like i need to say something.

Today i went to school, sat through a boring class, and then came home.

When i got home i logged onto my facebook, which is pretty normal. I saw one of my friends had posted that a friend from high school had just died.... When i asked who, i was told it was Ryan Alder.

from his blog:
"We’ve had a heartbreaking event in our family. Ryan and Kate and the baby were in a car accident on their way back to Utah from Oregon Thursday at about 5pm. The baby is fine, Kate was flown to a trauma center in Reno; she sustained head and internal injuries. Ryan sustained a serious head injury and died at the scene.

The accident was north of Winnemucca, Nevada. We don’t know why (sleep, distraction, etc.) but they drifted off the right side of the road, Ryan must have over-corrected as he tried to get the car back on the road, it rolled, and during the roll he sustained the fatal blow to his head. He never regained consciousness. Emergency responders did all they could but pronounced him dead at the scene about an hour and a half later. Luckily, two nurses happened upon the accident and were able to help.

Kate’s parents (Dan and Krista Doshier) are with her now in the hospital in Reno. Ron and Tracy Alder (Ryan’s parents) and Tom and Julie Dillenbeck (Ryan’s sister) are driving from Orem, Utah to pick up baby Cora in Winnemucca, on the way to Kate in Reno.

Kate is stable following surgery to stop bleeding in her brain. She has a serious skull fracture, broken bones in her neck (no spinal cord injury), cuts and bruises. The internal abdominal bleeding has stopped. She is heavily sedated now and over the next 24-48 hours that medication will be reduced to assess her condition."

My first thought was oh my gosh, he just barley got married! and i started thinking about how hard life will be for his wife, once she recovers. Ryan and his wife just recently had a baby girl, Reading through their blog i was in tears as i read about his excitement to be a daddy, and how much he already loved that little baby girl. I feel awful, which im sure is nothing compared to how his family is feeling right now.

But then I remembered who i am, and where i came from.... The things that i know. I am SO thankful for loving parents who have raised me in the gospel, and for a loving Savior who came to earth to make it possible for all of us to live with our families again. This is the only thing that can bring me some sort of peace, is knowing that someday i'll see him again, and that he will be able to live with his wife of only one year, and his brand new baby girl.

Life is so fragile, never take any moment for granted. Life the way you want to live with no regrets. Because today may be your last. Stay close to God, and remember he always loves you.

Summer Wanderings

Ok, so this post is WAY overdue, but better late than never right?

My mom mentioned over on her blog that i've been a busy little bee on my sewing machine, and boy have I. I bought a book in a quilt shop in Brigham City when we went for our family reunion that has patterns for wall hangings. You make one background and then as many different middle panels that you want. These middle panels simply snap on to the background made and can be switched for different seasons/events going on. I was a little worried because i don't have a large stash of scrap fabric and the example in the book looked very scrappy with no two pieces of fabric alike. I came up with the idea of buying charm packs, that way i could get a little scrap of each piece of fabric in the entire fabric line. I ended up buying three, two matched better than the third, which is okay because i think it helped make it a little scrappier. Anywho, i'm pretty proud of my three day work of art! see what you think.

So the big white spot in the middle is where all the backgrounds i make will snap on. I'm so excited to get it done and hanging in my house!

I also finished another little wall hanging in between spring and summer terms, i'm really glad with how it turned out. Now all i need is the courage to actually quilt things!

We've been in our new house for about a month now, and we absolutely love it! I feel like i have so much room to store things. Everything finally has a place and my house can look clean.... if i take the time to clean it. It's so nice to have a backyard for our dogs to run around in, and i even got my own sewing room!

The day moving day came we weren't quite ready to go, we had boxes piled up everywhere in our small little condo, and still tons to pack.
Some pictures of all the boxes and junk piled around waiting to be taken down.

The moving guys showed up right on time, and came with a big ol truck to put all our junk in.

About 30 minutes into hauling all our junk down the stairs, we were told that one of the guys was having some bad chest pains, so he was taking a little break. The next thing ya know.. these guys are driving in with their sirens a blasting.

The kid was only 16, so they figured better safe than sorry, and took him to the hospital. Now we were down to two movers and things slowed down quite a bit. It took us all morning to get things loaded into the truck, and finally we were off to the new house!

Imagine my happiness when we had everything unloaded and this is what it looked like.

All those boxes fit into one small room, yahoo! i knew i was off to a good start!

Here are some more pictures.... i'll have to take some more later, the house isn't picture clean right now, so this is what you get!

Well there you have it! next time i clean i'll take some pictures of the basement and what is hiding inside all of those bedrooms!

Crash, Smash, bye bye car

Today I got in a car accident on my way home from school. . . . . Luckily no one was really hurt except me, and my injuries were pretty minimal. So i was at 8th north and state street when the light turned green. I started going and the next thing i know everyone in front of me is slamming on their brakes. So i hit mine, but unfortunately, those one week old $200 ceramic brake pads didn't stop me fast enough and i crashed into the guy in front of me. My air bag deployed and hit my left hand, right arm, and right in my face. I got some burns/scrapes from the airbag.

So after several moments of shock i managed to find my phone and call curtis. "CALL THE POLICE!" is what he told me. So i called 911 and they told me an ambulance and police cars were on the way. When they finally got to the crash-zone (seemed like forever) they asked me if i could move my car off to the side of the road. I was in shock and couldn't do anything but cry. So the paramedics helped me out of my car and then put me in the ambulance and had the cop drive my car off to the side of the road. They checked my blood pressure and made sure i didn't have any neck or back injuries. (and i can now say i have VERY healthy blood! that's what the paramedic told me.... ) the Paramedic who was helping me kept pulling really stupid jokes trying to make me feel better and to help me stop crying. Eventually all his "it's ok.... you can fix your car" talk got into me and i settled down.

I called curtis and he came over to pick me up, since my car is not driveable anymore. It was leaking all sorts of transmission fluids, and we think it's probably totaled. This whole accident really was, well, an accident! i don't think i was driving more than 15 or 20 mph, but i guess that's all it takes to completely ruin your car.

It's been a few hours now since the incident, and im starting to come back to the real world. at first my body was pumping with so much adrenaline and shock that i couldn't believe anything was happening and i just kept telling people, 'im fine, im fine.' Now the pain is starting to come, i have a feeling i'm going to be sore for quite a while. I was so scared that everyone would be mad at me for crashing my car (silly me). Everyone has said "we're just glad you are safe!" Things could have been much worse and i'm glad things aren't too bad.

So my car..... Got pretty bent up. It now lives at cascade collision repair (can you believe they charge 121 dollars to go from maceys to cascade? that's like..... less than 200 yards!)

It's a good thing i was wearing my seatbelt. I really think it helped hold me back away from more airbag damage that could have been done.
But the other guys car..... Only had a few scrapes and dents.

Hopefully, i'll never, EVER have another one of these again. Getting hit in the face with an airbag does not = fun. And just so you know (because i'm sure everyone is dying to know) Airbags are STINKY! They smell like burning hair and plastic, and i feel like i stink now too. I suppose i could go change my clothes.... but i'm getting so tired now and just want to lay down and take a nap.

In other... not so exciting news...

I went to the quilt shop hop with my mom and i'm so excited to make the quilt from all the patterns we got!

I'm making some really cute yo-yo projects for the family reunion this weekend (bring your dollars!)

and i found a quilt book i want to buy...... but it costs 15 dollars and i'm too cheap to spend that much on a book. Maybe i'll find some dollars burning a hole in my pocket one day and go get it.

Happy Birthday....... TO ME!!

I kind of had a bad attitude about my birthday this year. I'm not really sure why, but i just kept telling myself "It's just another day in your life...." Fortunately, those around me, (who love me very much!) would not let it be just another day.
By the time i had gotten dressed for the day i was already brimming with happiness!
(This is me.... brimming with happiness! mostly i just look like a dork, but oh well)

I really felt like today was my special day. Yesterday (Friday), when i came home from school there were some flowers sitting on the table with a little note saying happy birthday from Curtis. This put me in a good mood all night and into my actual birthday day.

So after i got dressed, Curtis told me, Well you better come open your presents! There was a gift card to deseret book (so i could go buy a quilt kit.... he said he didn't know which one to pick out... what a great guy!) and a pretty necklace.

With my flowers, gift card, and necklace

Then we went to PF Changs for lunch, and then went and saw a movie. After the movie we went to the mall and i went and picked out the quilt kit that i wanted to add to my ever growing quilt kit box collection

We went up to Curtis' parents house and they had brought me back a cute purse and shirt from disney land, and also some of my favorite goofy's gummy worms!

Later this fine evening....... We headed to my parents house to have a little dinner with dad, brad, nish, gav and cai- i mean foofa. There were a few cards waiting for me, i even got one from my dentist! Another gift card to deseret book from brad & gang, and a freaking sweet "21 and terrific!" pin from my mom. My dad got me some simply limeade and simply lemonade.... in addition to buying us all porkchops and birthday cake.

Thanks everyone for telling me happy birthday, and making it a great day!

(and mom, incase you're reading this, i DID listen to the voicemail again and imagined you telling me happy birthday!)
